IMPORTANT - FOR ANYONE USING FANTASTICO
« on: January 19, 2005, 02:17:59 AM »

Recently we have had a few users who are doing one of the following things:
  • adding more programs via fantastico than their disk space will allow - WATCH your disk space!  If you don't have enough left you might not even be able to UNinstall the application
  • Moving an application installed with Fantastico to a new directory - you can NOT do this without messing your site up badly
  • Deleting files from programs installed with Fantastico without using the Fantastico Uninstall feature - doing this just makes a mess of Fantastico, leaves part of the application on your site and leaves tech support in a very hard position tryng to fix the situation
  • [li]Installing applications in the root directory instead of creating a new directory for it - while this can be done it should NOT be done by anyone who is not really familiar with Linux directories and directory structures

So when using Fantastico - please exercise caution.

thanks

IMPORTANT - Safety feature required for overworked dummies using FANTASTICO
« Reply #1 on: April 07, 2005, 03:18:25 PM »

Ok I admit having had issues with Fantastico, maybe we need a newbies manual for new customers.
It could be a handy resource for inexperienced users and save the tech guys alot of work, thus saving precious hours for more important client related issues.

I think fantastico should come with safe enabled features for newbies, take for example my current situation.

1. Cannot uninstall the smf board without the fantastico function.

I once again forgot to add the all important /smf or /forum to the directory (oh boy rolleyes)
so maybe a safety feature reminding overworked and tired souls should be implemented on fantastico. I would like to see a huge pop up appear reminding me that the directory has been left empty and would I like to continue the process?Huh

Anyone else agree with my idea and suggestion?

Ok now I have to lodge a ticket! Bummer.

I'm not sure what you mean you can't uninstall SMF without Fantastico function?  If you install something via Fantastico it is best if you uninstall it the same way unless you are very experienced and know what particular files and db's need to be removed.

Fantastico is not our product and as such is not something we can alter in any way.  I wish we could - for example it installs several programs in 'high security' mode.  This means that some directories that SHOULD be made writeable are NOT.  Which means the user has to go in and CHMOD the permissions to use some of the customization aspects of these programs.  I have seen this lately in Mambo, Gallery and Moodle.  Not sure if there are any others.

peace
