Uploading Images 101
« on: June 28, 2005, 12:32:41 PM »

Need some help with uploading images to my media manager.  I initially uploaded my images via ftp to the server and placed them under /public_html/images.  I then went to media manager and created a new  directory.  However, when I open the directory and click on "browse", mambo looks for images on my hard drive and not the images I posted to the server? Some guidance would be appreciated.  The Mambo tutorial on the Media Manager wasn't much help..I might add.  Thanks

Most mambo admin functions expect you to do the uploading directly in the admin panel, not using FTP.  Just find the files you want on your computer from within the Mambo media manager and upload them.  That should do it.

Yes, what Brad said is correct.

I am curious as to what about the tutorial wasn't helpful?  I read your message and went and looked at the tutorial.  Even without sound, it seemed to demonstrate through the movie how you were to upload the files via the media manager.  Mambo doesn't categorize anything you put in a directory via standard FTP.

Ok...problem resolved.  My initial confusion stemed from (1) my preconceived belief that images had to be sent to the server via ftp and (2) my inability to get any of my images to upload directly from my hard drive as demonstrated on the tutorial.  Upon further analysis, seems all the images I was trying to upload did not have the required file extensions to qualify.  I went back and successfully uploaded some test jpg files.  The tutorial is fine...my appologies...and thanks for the help

Some jpeg files will not upload from my hard drive.  They are images I obtained from a friends website (with permission).  On my hard drive the file extension is jpg.  However, Media Manager displays the file extension as jpe?  I know at one time (5 years ago) you could download images from basically anywhere on the Internet.  Has a control been created to preclude this practice?

JPE files are kind of sort of JPG files but not really.  Many times even renaming them to .JPG doesnt work.  It sounds like your friend is getting his images from a digital camera that auto saves a low resolution image as .JPE and the high resolution one as .JPG.  Some applications recognize .JPE as .JPG but a vast portion of them dont.
