I too installed smf in the root directory rather than creating a new directory. However, I found that by creating a link/url menu type and using sitename.net/index.php?action=index I was able to link to smf. I have not set up smf as yet. Can I leave things as they are or should I uninstall smf and reinstall in a new directory? Gosh..I think I'm catching on to this stuff!

You can leave it in the root if you want to, but we recommend against installing any applications directly into the root. If you decide to uninstall it using fantastico you may risk having fantastico just delete everything in the directory. I can not tell you for sure this would happen but it is a risk.
