emails and mx things
« on: September 21, 2005, 11:54:28 AM »

Hi,

I've just got a reseller package and am a real newbie with some questions that I'm sure are pretty basic!

My 'base' domain for my reseller account is registered at www.123-reg.co.uk.  I've changed the nameservers for the domain to point to ns6.alphaone-tech.com and ns7.alphaone-tech.com.  On the domain at 123-reg I haven't got a 'proper' mail box, just a mail forwarding address (the only option you've got!).  My questions are:

1, What will happen to this address once the domain has resovled?  Will it die? 123-reg give no info about this!

2, If it doesn't die and I want to keep this simple forwarding address do I need to change anything at 123-reg or in my new cpanel?

3, If it does die (and I guess it will), I'll have to set-up a new box or forwarding thing in cpanel right?

4, Do I have to change any of the mx settings at 123-reg as well as having changed the nameservers?!  At present the mx records are set as: mx0.123-reg.co.uk. (priority 10) and mx1.123-reg.co.uk. (priority 20).  I can change these or add mx records, but the info on 123-reg kind of gives the impression that if the nameservers have been changed, changing the mx records won't do anything!  (the bit for changing mx records chaning are on same page where you can change the A, CNAME and TXT settings, do I need to do anything to these as well?!)

5,  I take it the answers for the above questions would also apply for any domains I change to point at different accounts in the reseller package / whm once I get it going properly!

Thanks,

James

You need to create the appropriate email accounts on your domain here.  Do it before it resolves so you wont lose any mail.  Once you forward to AlphaOne's DNS servers you will control all your CNAME, A, MX, etc. records here.

Thanks for your quick responce, but it appears that the email hasn't come accross with the domain!

The domain has resolved (http://jpc-design.com) and works great.  It resolved in under 18 hours!

I've set-up a new box in cpanel (info@) I can login into it via thunderbird and it seems to work ok.  I went cancelled the email forwarding in 123-reg, but if I try and send to info@ jpc-design .com (gaps in for anti spam ;-)) it now bounces from 123-reg:

So it looks like the mx records aren't right somewhere!  If I put the email forwarding back in 123-reg it all works fine as it did before.  Any ideas on how I can sort it out, or do emails take longer to resolve than the web side of things?!

Thanks,

James

It shouldn't take any time.  But then again I have never heard of a registrar having MX records management for a domain.

This is some quirk with your registrar because if you look at your domain at DNS Stuff, all is working correctly with the MX records.

It all seems to have shaken itself down now...

At one point I had the very strange situation where I could send to it fine from my gmail and yahoo mail accounts, but if I tried to send from a couple of the other emails I've got they bounced via 123-reg! huh

They all seem to work properly now.

Thanks for the help and advise, it's nice to know it's not just me! cheesy

And everytime I come onto the forum the skin has changed lol!

Thanks,

The domain probably had resolved for yahoo & gmail servers but not for the server from your other email accounts.

Yeah, Wolf upgraded SMF yesterday & we are adding templates to it.  Wolf put up the XP template which looks nice but I found some navigation things I didn't think users would understand so I changed it.

You can control some of the look & feel by changing templates in your Profile
