file permissions
« on: January 29, 2006, 05:38:46 PM »

I am not sure if this belongs in the Joomla section or the Cpanel discussions.
When I try to chmod file permissions in the JPG Flash Rotator Module (that is installed in my Joomla application) through my Cpanel, they do not change.
when I try to upload replacement images into the proper folders within the module, I get a file permissions error.(using Dreamweaver to FTP)

I am having other similar file permission problems uploading other pictures, etc.

This is a recent install of Joomla (within weeks).

Server settings in my Joomla are "set to server defaults" in the site configuration.

Is this a Cpanel issue, or a Joomla issue?
Are there different server settings since the recent wave of Mambo/Joomla hacks that we have experienced?

(I have had tree sites hacked - they are all updated to the most recent Joomla version - )

Any other particular reccomendations for Joomla security?

Thanks - Tom

We have not changed server settings because doing so would break almost every popular PHP application that is in use.  Lord alone knows I wish we could, because this nightmare affected over 50 of our customers on various servers.

The issue is a Joomla one - because when you install a mod or anything via the admin panel, it is owned by 'nobody'. (A problem in and of itself for security issues, but the only fixes to that would break the application itself)  In the past people have put in tech support tickets having us 'reown' the directories with a variety of success - in some cases the module breaks doing that. In other cases it works fine and makes it more secure AND allows them to change files easier.

Unfortunately so many of the apps force you to have 777 permissions on files or directories, (or they set them that way for convenience), that in itself creates numerous security holes.

I would check Joomla forums etc and see what others say about the RIGHT way to fix it so that you can update those particular files.  Once you find the 'best' way, if you need us to CHOWN or CHMOD, we will do so...hesitantly...chuckle

peace

Thanks for the prompt reply - for now I will be using a simple .jpg image and the flashrotator can wait in line for another day.

I'll go to the forums in my "spare time" and try to sort out the flash rotator permission issues. I have been spending alot of time rebuilding Mambo/Joomla sites (three of them) and organizing my site back-up files etc.
I like Joomla 6 days out of seven, maybe eight, but these last two weeks have been full of the seventh and eighth days (so to speak)

I am going to get out some content for my sites instead - which is the reason I am doing stuff online in the first place.

Slightly overwhelmed by technology today.

I sure appreciate telling me where to look, that eliminates half of the possibilities right now.

Be blessed, Tom
