Access MySQL directly?
« on: February 27, 2006, 02:01:41 PM »

Does AOT allow direct access to a MySQL database?  The reason I ask, I was looking at a piece of software that connects directly to MySQL using the standard port (which I believe the software allows to be changed in config).  This software allows scheduling of backups of MySQL databases.  I downloaded a trial and entered the credential information but was told I could not connect to the MySQL database.  Their tech support said the webhost may be setup to prevent direct access to MySQL.  Is there a way I can turn it on or does that open too much of a security threat?

We used to allow direct access via the MySQL port, but after the last hack removed that option.  When multiple sites got hacked, it did not use the direct MySQL access, but one out of date mambo site that Bruno was running actually did connect to another server that was drawing data out of the mysql database via the MySQL port.

So...we turned that option off completely, sorry.

I thought that might be the case.

Thanks,

There may be something else we can do - if you have a static IP address, we might possibly allow remote access to MySQL for a specific IP and then bind it to 'changing' ports.  (ie we'd have to let you know the rotation schedule for different ports).  You've been with us for awhile and I am not concerned with you having access.  Let me see how viable that is, but let me know if you have a static IP.
